Most departments will require you to complete the Basic Fire Academy to be eligible for an entry level position.

The California Professional Firefighters (CPF) has a great section for anyone looking to become a firefighter. The Joint Apprenticeship Committee works to ensure the training given to new firefighters meets approved standards.

Anyone seeking a position in the fire service will be required to take a physical ability test. The nationally recognized CPAT test is widely accepted but be sure to check with the department you apply for individual requirements.
